MORE BUTT SWEAT AND TEARS

Word verification bugs the fuck out of me when commenting on other blogs; but I have turned it on in hope of eliminating ANONYMOUS.

Have had two more hits from him since I deleted his spam fifteen minutes ago.

Sorry

  1. I have anonymous blocked on my blog and I haven't had any since I did it.

Instead of verification (I FUCKING HATE IT), try moderating. That one at least only involves you approving the comment and not the aggravating fill in the blanks POS.

    1. I think what I did was report an anonymous comment as spam, and from then on, no more anonymous comments. Also, set your "who can comment" to your preference...i.g., only people with Blogger accounts, etc (as Nan points out below). At least with the moderation, YOU get to decide what comments get published...and that does away with the very ANNOYING verification BS.

  3. There is an in-between step -- just require that all comments be from a registered user (i.e., someone who's taken the time to create an account with Google, WordPress, Disqus, etc) but don't ask for the word verification. You'll still get some spam, but it'll be of the innocuous advertising spambot variety, e.g., "I really enjoy your blog. Please check out my blog [which turns out to be advertising for a product of some sort]. By requiring commenters have actual online IDs, you eliminate anyone trying to sign in as Anonymous.

I started moderating because I had a couple trolls dropping by who wanted to use my blog as a platform to argue with or denigrate other commenters. My thought is that someone wants to start an argument he or she needs to go straight to the person they've got a bitch with instead of trying to hijack threads on other blogs. My blog gets so little traffic that moderating isn't much hassle -- don't know if I'd want to do it if I had more than a handful of readers.

  4. For the "butt sweat" try Anti-Monkey Butt Powder (did a post on it back in Dec '09). Saw some at Tractor Supply last week, if they have it here UP on the Tundra in the middle of the winter, the stuff must be available nationwide.

Haven't had too much trouble with spamm in the comments. Just a few like when I did a post on a car being raffled and got spamm with a link to some car dealer. Others in that same vein, but with comment moderation I'm able to delete them without them ever appearing on my blog.

    1. We have a Tractor Supply here in town and I have seen the Monkey Butt powder; I have also seen a Nasty Ass soap in the Vermont Trader catalog.

      I probably could use both.

  5. I am going to try Nan's suggestion, if I can figure out how to do it. I do not like the word verification at all but my readers were getting my spam which I couldn't understand but went to verification to keep them happy.
